Every year on 21 June, we celebrate World Giraffe Day, a special occasion dedicated to one of Africa’s most iconic and fascinating animals. As the tallest land mammal on Earth, the giraffe has become a symbol of the African wilderness and is always a favourite among guests visiting Rockfig Safari Lodge.
With their towering height and distinctive markings, giraffes are impossible to miss. Adult males can grow up to 5.5 metres tall, using their long necks to browse leaves high in the treetops where few other animals can reach. Interestingly, despite their incredible neck length, giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans—just seven.
One of the easiest ways to tell male and female giraffes apart is by looking at their ossicones, the horn-like structures on top of their heads. Female giraffes typically have tufts of hair on their ossicones, while mature males often appear bald on top due to frequent sparring and rubbing.
Another fascinating feature is their tongue, which can grow up to 50 centimetres long and has a dark blue-black colour that helps protect it from sunburn while feeding for hours each day.
A giraffe sighting on safari is always a memorable experience. Whether slowly making their way across the bushveld or standing watch over the surrounding landscape, these gentle giants bring a sense of grace and wonder to every encounter. Their height also gives them an excellent vantage point, often allowing them to spot danger long before other animals do.
